American Idol - The Best & Worst of American Idol ( Limited Edition )
Manufacturer: Capital Entertainment
Brand: First Look Home Entertainment
Features the best and worst performances from the 1st four seasons of the pop cultural phenomena American Idol. Worst: Includes outrageous performances from William Hung and a collection of some of the most unreal performers. Best: Features the hottest talent to come out of the show: Carrie Underwood, Bo Bice, Fantasia (single "I Believe" hit #1 on the charts), Diana Degarmo (single "Dreams" hit #2 on the Billboard charts), Constantine, Clay Aiken (first single was #1 with 400,000 sold first week), Ruben Studdard (platinum artist whose album was in the Top 10 for 6 weeks), and Kelly Clarkson (double platinum). Many millions adore it, many others probably wish it was illegal, but there's no denying the magnetic pull of American Idol on television viewers. Maybe it's that we can't avert our eyes from the train wreck that comprises about 90% of the contestants, or that we appreciate the heart and soul of the ones who are genuinely talented; or maybe we just love to hate house villain Simon Cowell and his caustic put-downs. Good, bad, or whatever, American Idol really is the phenomenon it claims to be. And with some ten hours of material spread out over three discs--there's so much stuff here that even the bonus features have bonus features--this overview of the first four seasons will surely satisfy even the most ardent fans. Disc One, The Best Of, takes us from the first step in the process (the cattle-call try-outs so popular they need stadiums to accommodate all the hopefuls) through the initial auditions and interviews with judges Cowell, Randy Jackson, and Paula Abdul to the performances seen on the telecasts themselves--including those by eventual winners Kelly Clarkson, Ruben Studdard, Fantasia Barrino, and Carrie Underwood, as well as runners-up Bo Bice and Clay Aiken, among others. In other words, nothing unexpected. Indeed, for many viewers, Disc Two (The Worst Of) will likely be the favorite. For it is here that the set focuses on our fascination with the profoundly clueless, those utterly untalented...

Is fear a factor for you? Find out as you watch all the outrageous stunts, creepy insects and high-flying acrobatics of Season One - on DVD for the first time ever! This exciting two-disc collection captures every heart-stopping, pulse-pounding Season One episode where players attempt thrilling stunts that challenge their worst fears. Now you can relive all the wacky, wild, and gross moments of this smash-hit show that will have you squirming in your seat! Fear Factor is not intended to be art. It is a gross-out, "oh no he didn't eat (or do) that" game show that is intended to make the home viewer recoil in disgust (and sometimes squeal with glee). All nine episodes from the first season, which debuted in 2001, are included on the two-disc set, which includes something for everyone who likes a little ick factor in their lives: Contestants being smothered by rats. Check. Seemingly sane folks willing to be chased by attack dogs. Check. The iron-stomached wonders who'll eat animal eyeballs to win. Check. Hosted by snarky Joe Rogan (NewsRadio), who sometimes appears amazed at what people are willing to do for a prize, Fear Factor does offer some truly thrilling elements (such as the episode where the contestants hurl themselves from a telephone phone). Yes, it's not right, but there's a certain part of most of us that can't turn away from accidents. When we do this on a highway, we feel guilty. But with this show, hey, the players knew what they were signing up for. The problem with the series is that the premise grows redundant pretty fast. Each contestant must make it through three challenges. The first is usually a test of your strength or speed (see above reference to attack dogs). The second relies on creepy crawly things either being ingested or smothering your face. And finally, we have tasks that must be completed faster than the other opponents. Very few of the contestants exhibit actual fear. But revulsion? Absolutely. --Jae-Ha Kim
